VF moving Jansport Equipment to San Leandro

Vanity Fair, the parent company of Jansport, is moving the Jansport Equipment Division to San Leandro, same location as The North Face which is also under the Vanity Fair umbrella. Mike Egeck, Pres of VF Outdoor, believes it to be a good thing and a way to share capabilities and skills. Some employees are relocating, others are out of a job. What will come out of this move- a Jansport Tadpole? A combo labeled TNF/Jansport pack? Will they keep the separation in tact? We'll find out soon enough- the move will be done by the end of 2nd qtr 2005.

This is making for some entertaining "Jansportface" merchandise, too. North face gear made from second string materials to meet the "look like everyone else" requirements of the Long Island populace while being cheap enough to discard in time for the next big thing.

don't you see the strategy here? Once Egeck has control, he can sell the Jansport brand whatever way he pleases. North Face can remain high end and Jansport will be sold everywhere and lose whatever credibility it ever had. VF is famous for this kind of thing. Who wants Lee or Wrangler jeans anymore? It'll be the same thing with Jansport. Right now Jansport is a competitor, but Egeck will squash it and turn it into a shit brand that it won't have to compete with anymore.
